Jersey FA Walking Football League grows again
The popularity of walking football in Jersey continues to grow, with two new teams entering the Jersey FA’s league competition, which is back under way for another season.
The formation of sides from St Ouen FC and Madeira FC takes the Alexforbes and Hepburns Walking Football League to 10 teams for the 2024-25 season, more than double the number of entries from just four years ago.
Matches are on Sunday mornings at Springfield Stadium. As the name suggests, players must walk. They concede a free-kick if they are spotted running, and there is no contact.
Alexforbes Offshore and Hepburns Insurance have continued their joint sponsorship of the league for another season, including kitting out each team.
Jonathan Le Fondre, Chairman of Jersey FA’s Competitions Committee, said: “It’s fantastic to see the league continue to expand. The addition of two more teams shows the increasing interest in this format of the game, which offers a fun and competitive way for older players, or those recovering from injury, to stay active and engaged in football.”
Tim Townsend, Head of Wealth Management and Corporate Consulting at Alexforbes Offshore, added: “We are thrilled to continue our support. It's not just about the sport; it’s about promoting healthy lifestyles and community spirit. Walking football provides a great opportunity for players to keep enjoying football later in life, and we are proud to play a part in its success.”
Will Woodford, Group Sales Director at Hepburns Insurance, said: “At Hepburns, we’re delighted to continue our support for the league. Walking football isn’t just about competition; it’s also about providing a healthy team environment and connections supporting both physical and mental health. Seeing the league develop in size speaks volumes about its positive impact on the community.”
Anyone over the age of 45 and wanting to play should get in touch with a club to find out about the registration process. The ten teams this season are: Portuguese Football Club, St John, St Ouen, St Peter, Trinity, First Tower, Madeira, Grouville, Rozel Rovers and St Paul’s.
St Paul’s player and the league co-ordinator, Jean-Luc Desbois, said: “It’s been amazing to see walking football grow in the island. We’ve seen players rediscover their passion for football, and the social aspect and banter is just as important. The sense of community within the league is incredibly strong, and that’s something we’ll continue to foster.”
For those wanting to try walking football in a less competitive environment, there are regular “Just Play” sessions run by the Jersey Football Association at Springfield on Tuesdays (12.30-1.30pm), Thursdays (9.30-10.30am) and Fridays (9.30-10.30am). A women’s only session for over 30s runs on Tuesdays (6-7pm) at Oakfield. Those wanting more information should contact Info@JerseyFA.com
