Ynys Mon 2019: Jersey's women suffer narrow semi-final loss against hosts
Jersey's women will play in the bronze-medal match on Friday after a battling 1-0 loss to Inter-Island Games hosts Ynys Mon in the semi-finals.
In a hugely physical encounter, the home side went close after six minutes when a cross-come-shot hit the top of the bar. Moments later Ceri Slaney's strike was comfortably held by Jersey goalkeeper Sara Luce, who had another outstanding night in front of the crowd of over 750 at Amlwch.
The Ynys Mon goalkeeper, Nicky Davies, was also one of the stars, mopping up Jersey's through-balls as a sweeper and hitting long-clearances to try to set the hosts on the attack. Jersey dealt with those high balls well though, and at the other end Megan Wood and Jodie Botterill were linking up well.
On the half hour mark Eve Watson's long-range effort flew over the bar, while Wood's clever lob was plucked out of the air by Davies.
Just 10 seconds after the restart Ynys Mon were ahead as striker Lexi Crawley fired into the top corner in a stunning start to the half. Natasha Keen had an opportunity to level the scores just a few minutes later but her strike cleared the bar.
Jersey enjoyed the bulk of the possession as the game wore on but could not find that final killer pass or clear-cut opportunity to test Davies, in a game reminiscent of the men's frustrating 1-0 loss, also against Ynys Mon, the previous night.
Jersey's women will now face Hitra (who lost 5-1 to the Isle of Man) in Friday's bronze-medal match.
